The Conservative Party wins a majority in the UK Election 2015The Conservative Party won a majority of 331 out of 650 seats in the UK General Election 2015 with David Cameron becoming Prime Minister for a second term. The shock result also resulted in the immediate resignations of three of his opponents; Ed Miliband of The Labour Party, Nick Clegg of The Liberal Democrats and Nigel Farage of the UK Independence Party. The Conservative Party took a majority of seats primarily from their Coalition partners The Liberal Democrat Party (LibDem) whose key Ministers Danny Alexander, Vince Cable, Ed Davey and Lynne Featherstone all lost their seats. read more

The DEC Nepal Earthquake Appeal has now raised £45mOn Saturday 25th April 2015 a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. It severely shook the lives of at least 8m people and left many homeless. Nepal's major cities, including the capital Kathmandu, have been badly damaged and rural areas near the epicentre have been completely cut off by avalanches. Already over 7500 people have been confirmed dead and the figure is likely to rise significantly in the coming days. read more

Winners are announced at The British Indian Awards 2015 The winners of the British Indian Awards 2015 were announced on 24th April 2015 at the Chateau Impney Hotel, Worcestershire. The evening was a celebration to the success and achievements of Britain’s Indian individuals, groups and business people. Hosted by Kamlesh Purohit of BBC Radio Leicester, over 300 people attended the glamorous event, including singer and songwriter Navin Kundra and some of the cast of Desi Rascals. read more

Lopa Patel MBE - the first Asian woman to receive the Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion Digital Entrepreneur and Founder of Redhotcurry.com, Lopa Patel MBE, has become one of the latest recipients of the Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion, becoming the first Asian woman to receive the award. The Queen's Award for Enterprise Promotion was formed in 2004 and looks to recognise individual people who have played an important role in promoting enterprise skills. Professor Niloy J Mitra wins the BCS Roger Needham Award 2015 Professor Niloy J. Mitra has been awarded the BCS Roger Needham Award for 2015 in recognition of his outstanding work in the area of computer graphics and 3D geometry. Dr Mitra is a Professor of Geometry Processing in the Department of Computer Science, University College London (UCL). His research focuses on extracting high-level semantic understanding of the world by analysing raw and unstructured data collections . The grand goal is to better understand the interplay between geometric form and object function. read more

Sir Venki Ramakrishnan confirmed as President Elect of the Royal SocietyNobel laureate Sir Venkatraman (Venki) Ramakrishnan has been confirmed as President Elect of the Royal Society - the first Indian to head the prestigious scientific institution. The result of a ballot of the Fellowship was confirmed at a meeting of the Society’s Council today. He will take up the post of President on 1 December 2015.Sir Venki studies how genetic information is translated by the ribosome to make proteins, and the action of antibiotics on this process. He received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2009 with Tom Steitz and Ada Yonath and was awarded a knighthood in 2012. read more

Mahatma Gandhi statue unveiled to a poignant speech by his grandsonThe new statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square was unveiled by Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley at a ceremony today (14th March 2015). The ceremony featured a poignant speech by Gandhi's grandson Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Amitabh Bachchan, one of India's most prominent actors also read words written by Gandhi. The event was attended by over 1000 guests including Lord and Lady Desai of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, the charity that raised over £1million to fund the statue. read more

Acoustics engineer Dr. Amar Bose to be honoured at The Asian Awards The late Dr. Amar Bose, Founder of Bose Corporation, is to be honoured with the Founders Award at The Asian Awards on 17th April 2015 in London. Born in 1929, Dr. Amar Bose was an Indian academic who turned his hand to building one of the most respectable acoustics companies in the world, the Bose Corporation. On his death in 2011, he bequeathed the majority of the stock in his company in the form of non-voting shares. to his alma mater, Massachusetts Institute of Technology - the largest single philanthropic donation by an Asian. Bose Corporation has a turnover of $2 billion-a-year. read more

BBC airs banned documentary 'India's Daughter' about the Delhi rape victim BBC 4 aired Leslee Udwin's documentary 'India's Daughter', about the Delhi rape victim, on 4th March 2015 despite the film being banned in India. A court in Delhi has blocked the broadcast of the film and Indian home minister Rajnath Singh has promised an investigation into whether "norms have been violated" for the filming. India's parliamentary affairs minister M Venkaiah Naidu declared: "We can ban the film in India. But this is an international conspiracy to defame India. We will see how the film can be stopped abroad too." read more
